Happy Dental Hygienist Week from Fields Family Dental!!

Did you know April 6-10 is National Dental Hygienist Week?

In celebration of Dental Hygienist week, here’s some information about the dental hygiene profession and what you can expect at your hygiene appointment with the Fields Family Dental hygienists.

Dental Hygienist Role

At Fields Family Dental our dental hygienist are an integral part of our team. Typically, you spend a lot of time with your dental hygienist because she preforms the initial intra-oral screening, takes x-rays and photos, manages cleaning and discusses the importance of oral hygiene. In addition, your hygienist will chart all important findings as well as set your following appointment.

Fields Family Dental couldn’t be as effective without our wonderful dental hygienist, your experience wouldn’t be the same without them!

What to Expect During Your Dental Hygiene Appointment

  • Health History - your hygienist will ask about your overall health as well as your dental health, and any recent changes. This is very important so we can pinpoint any issues that require special precautions during your cleaning.

  • Cancer Screening - your hygienist will examine the skin in and around your mouth for any lumps, bumps or abnormalities.

  • Evaluating Periodontal Health and Measuring - your hygienist will closely check the health of your gums. She will use a tiny probe to measure the space between your gums and teeth. Generally, a measurement of 3 mm or less indicates healthy gum tissue. If the measurements are 4-5 mm this indicates periodontal disease which requires a deep cleaning. Any measurement over 6mm will require a referral to the Periodontist (Gum Specialist) for an evaluation.

  • Checking for Decay - your hygienist will check your teeth for decay and note locations to discuss with Dr. Fields or Dr. Cho. She will also check for staining and calcium build-up/plaque.

  • Scaling - the hygienist will use instruments and ultrasonic cleaners to remove plaque from your teeth.

  • Polishing - a mechanical polisher and polishing compound is used to smooth the teeth and remove any leftover stain.

  • Education - your dental hygienist will discuss brushing and flossing to help improve your overall periodontal health.

  • Setting your Next Appointment - your dental hygienist will set up your next appointment for either 3, 4 or 6 months. It is very important to keep these appointments to keep your teeth looking their best and healthiest!

To set up your next appointment call 410-672-3501 or email FieldsFamilyDental@gmail.com.
